Minutes: Without objection, the minutes from the October 24,2017 General Membership meeting will be approved by unanimous consent. Approved!
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Gary Druckrey presented a written financial report as of October,2017. Balance forward: $12,185.59, Deposits: $8810, Expenses: $214, Register Balance: $20,781.59, Tournament Fund: $(4800), Current Men’s Club balance: $14,106.59. This report is posted on the bulletin board.
GUEST SPEAKER: Bob Breidenbach:
Bob talked about his early days as Club Pro (15 years ago) at PDG. He encouraged members to welcome Andy Diaz as the new course Maintenance Superintendent. He reflected on how one member at his first meeting with the Men’s Club asked why we hired someone so young. Please be cordial with Andy.
Bob brought his famous Axe Handle to the meeting to demonstrate the correct way to grip the club. He uses the Axe to show how the proper grip should look. Anytime you want to test your grip, the Axe is behind the desk in the Pro Shop; Bob will work with you. The goal is to have the clubhead square at contact.
Bob did mention that 85% of his lessons are with Women. They want to learn the correct way. Men seem to have it all down and don’t need any help. It appears that women don’t think we men have all the answers; imagine that!
That last point brings up another suggestion from Bob. Please don’t try to correct your playing partner’s swing during a round. Nothing good can come of it and you can do more harm than good. Let the professionals teach and you will maintain those friendships.
Officers Comments/Reports:
President, Doug Hodson:
Jim Pollard, our new Webmaster, has cleaned up the Men’s Club site and eliminated last year’s old information.
Mike Bridges did a great job of hanging our new White Boards for tournament results and announcements. Please don’t use them as a personal message medium as they are only for tournament information. There are special markers that must be used to post a message, please see Bob Breidenbach.
The No Parking Red Zone signs (stone) are in place. Charlie Hunt did the signs for us and did an excellent job. If you see Charlie, please thank him for his work. He only charged us for the stones but there was a lot of labor that went in to the painting.
Many of the Men’s Board positions need to be filled for next season. March 14, 2018 is the election date at 7 AM. If you know anyone who would like to join the Board or you would like us to talk to, please let Doug know.
Andy Diaz is the new Golf Course Superintendent. He will report to PDG full time in one month (the notice he gave his last employer). Andy is very capable (32 years of experience) and we hope to have him attend a General Membership meeting ASAP (hopefully January) for an introduction to the membership.
There will be a retirement party for Mario Lopez on January 13, 2018. The party will be held in the Ballroom from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
If you haven’t paid this year’s dues, please do so as soon as possible. Be sure to indicate if you want the additional $5.00 added to the application for the Hole-in-One prize. Dues can be paid up until November 30th without a late penalty. After November 30th, there will be an additional $5.00 late fee.
We are “Cart Path Only” until December 4th. Please take your Sand Bottle with you to the next shot and all other fairway shots. Please make sure your bottles have the “seeded sand”, not just dirt. Please continue to fix ball marks on the greens.
We just found out that Dick Perry, a long-time resident in PDG and former President of the Men’s Club, passed away about three months ago.
The schedule for Team Play is posted on the Dry Erase White Board. If you cannot make a match for any reason, please let Doug or another participant know so they can find a replacement. If someone doesn’t show up, PDG forfeits a point.
VP, Rick Yeo: Rick announced that he has commitments from 19 sponsors. This is the best year we have ever had for sponsorship. Rick has done a great job of helping offset the cost of tournaments through sponsorships.
Secretary, John Whitney: N/R
Treasurer, Gary Druckrey: See Financial report above.
Club Liaison, Bob Larsen: There was no PDG Golf meeting this month.
Bob has recruited 24 volunteers to maintain the Greens as they did last year. He did a great job of securing enough workers to maintain all the greens on the course. They will work on the greens as often as possible. Members can help keep our putting surfaces the best in the Valley by fixing their divots as well as one or two more. The sooner we fix ball marks, the sooner they will restore themselves.
One attendee remarked that the new score cards are too big for some golf carts and it is difficult to put them in your pocket. Bob will take that complaint to the committee.
Member- at-Large, John Coyle:
Desert Sun writer Peter Donavan will speak to the group at the December meeting.
Andy Diaz will speak at the January meeting.
Member- at-Large, Tony Tilt: N/R
Handicap, Clint Jay: Clint brought some SCGA bag tags for anyone who wants one. He isn’t sure he will receive more but he did place an order. First come first serve on the tags he brought.
There is a new Handicap Committee headed up by Steve Warren and Ron Jackson that will take over on January 1, 2018. You can help them out by printing names clearly on scorecards and writing legibly and including GHIN numbers, names, Date and Gross Score.
Until we announce something contrary, you should not post scores from tournaments or Wednesday Sweeps.
We are processing new member applications and current member renewals. We appear to be only half way through the normal membership. Renewals are available in the Golf Information Center. Renewal forms have been sent out to members who have email addresses. After November 30th, there is a $5.00 late charge.
Membership, Brian Duckworth: We have received a few more renewals.
Tournaments, Orest Kruhlak: Forms for the Eclectic tournament are available in the clubhouse. Play dates are December 6th and 10th at a cost of $110. It is a two-man team event. We only have 35 teams so far, positioning us behind schedule. A new twist this year is prizes for low Gross and Net scores after day One.
Applications for Match Play (by handicap) are available. All matches must be completed by March 21st.
Publicity, Dennis Hanks: N/R
Hearts & Flowers, David Shaw: Two cards were sent out last month, “Thinking of You” for Mike Delnick and “Get Well” for Phil Fields. David also sent Get Well cards to Ken and Larry Miracle in addition to one mailed to Charlie Fontana. From November of 2016 to this November we have sent out 56 cards
Hole-in-One, Ken Gordon: N/R
Social, Howard Hudson: N/R
SCGA, Clint Jay: N/R
Rules, Byron Harvie: John Coyle asked to use this time to report that he witnessed one of our members moving his ball with his club to avoid a tree he was next to. This is obviously a blatant rule violation but John was too far away to confront the man. We need to be aware of these types of violations and report the individual to the Pro Shop. You should respectively confront the player you saw abuse the rules.
AM Sweeps, Ken Gordon: He and his group of volunteers are in the Ballroom at 6:45AM. Please arrive to check in as early as possible so everyone can make their starting time by 7:30AM.
PM Sweeps, Bob Breidenbach: N/R
Past President, John Coyle: People are still parking in the No Parking area, we need to confront them and turn in their cart license number in to Bob Breidenbach.
Pete Donavan (Desert Sun Baseball writer) will speak at our December meeting.
Larry Bohannon (Golf Writer) will speak in February.
Parliamentarian, Dale Erickson: We need to clean up our presentation of Motions to be seconded and voted on. We should make clear and distinct motions, have them seconded and then move to discussions. We have grown sloppy and it is often unclear what the motion was in the first place.
The Minutes are posted on the Website for everyone’s information, please check it out at pdgmgc.com
Canadian Representative, Chris Marshall: N/R
Webmaster, Jim Pollard: Doug will report for Jim, since he cannot attend the meetings. As Doug said, Jim is doing a great job with the site and we encourage you to check it out when you can.
OLD BUSINESS: None
NEW BUSINESS: None
CLOSING REMARKS (PRESIDENT): Welcome back to everyone.
ADJOURNMANT. President Doug Hodson adjourned the meeting at: 10:15 am.
