Guest Speaker Peter Donavan shared stories, opinions and memories of numerous athletes, general managers and coaches. His talk was entertaining, informational and humorous. His knowledge of all aspects of the sporting world was impressive, from Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Football, including some who wrote about them. He will surely speak to our group again, don’t miss it.
Officers Comments/Reports:
President, Doug Hodson:
We hope everyone enjoyed our Guest Speaker, Peter Donavan this morning. It is nice to hear about other sports, in addition to golfers.
In January, Andy Diaz, our new Grounds Superintendent will be our guest speaker. Bob Bridenbach will probably drop by also. This is a first for the Men’s Club and should be informative. In February, Larry Bohannon will speak.
We have an election scheduled for March. As of today, we only have one person for each open position. Anyone who wishes to run for a seat on the Board, contact Doug. We would like to add new people to the Board, and generate new ideas.
Our Greens are in great shape, as is the course. These greens are probably faster than we are accustomed to but they are great for putting. We all need to do our part and fix divots on the greens. Please fix yours and maybe one or two others. Our Green repair teams will be at work soon but we all need to do our part to keep the course tops in the Valley.
VP, Rick Yeo: We have a final list of sponsors for this season, which provides $8100 for tournaments and other expenses. This is the major funding program for our tournaments and we thank Rick for his hard work in securing their support.
Secretary, John Whitney: N/R
Treasurer, Gary Druckrey: See statement above for Financials.
Club Liaison, Bob Larsen:
- Inquired about the dead and dying trees on the Course and the cart path yardage markers.
- Inquired about the Club Washer at the hitting net. The Course Superintendent is responsible for its maintenance and he will study the matter.
- Reported that the Ball Mark Repair Team is re-formed and operating. There is a divot repair seminar by the 4th tee practice area on the 21st
- Asked that the Superintendent present his “Assessment of the Course and his Plan for going forward” at the General Membership meeting in January.
- Requested that the Superintendent have his staff insure the course set-up provides at least a two- club length clearance between the tee markers and the back of the teeing area on every hole (especially holes 11,14 and 17). He asked that the distances between the tee markers and flag routinely vary from hole to hole, (don’t have the same distance on several par-three holes on any given day).
- He was asked to request that the maintenance crew not fill ball washers to the brim and avoid the “baths” players are taking on some holes when they wash their golf ball.
- Bob also asked that players replace trap rakes perpendicular to the trap with the handle in the trap, as close to the lip as possible.
Superintendent’s Comments:
- Green cutting height is .125 inches. Less water will be used on the greens, making them firmer, truer and faster. Over time, the green shapes will be modified to soften the turning radii when cutting the grass.
- Wear on the greens will be addressed. Irrigation will be reduced, firming the turf and cutting the fringe with a walking mower will help.
- The bunkers will be dressed to insure the green side lips are at least 2 inches high to discourage putting out of traps.
- The 90-degree Rule will be in effect for the remainder of the season.
- A divot party will be organized in early January, please fix your own and other divots on greens.
- The Pine Trees are affected by a “mite”. It can be treated and may require the course to be closed for a day.
- General: A farewell reception for Mario Lopez will be on January 13 from 1pm to 5pm. There will be a basket provided for cards and gifts. Coffee and Cake will be served.
Member- at-Large, John Coyle: Jimmy Kidd made some great signs for the Ham Shoot.
On January 16th Andy Diaz will speak to the general membership. He has a long history of Course Management.
In February, Larry Bohannon will address the general membership at the Monthly meeting.
If you see a rules violation, please address it with the player or players in a respectful way. Pointing out a mistake is much less threatening than accusing someone of violating the rules.
Member- at-Large, Tony Tilt: N/R
Handicap, Clint Jay: Clint asked that we all take time to fill out score cards correctly and legibly. The new team that will take over for Clint will need the information to be as accurate as possible. First names only, initials only, GHIN numbers missing, dates omitted and cards not signed/attested are unacceptable. The new committee cannot cover for inaccurate reporting as Clint did (due to his years of experience).
You do not have to post scores after Sweeps events. Often scores reported were different than the score cards, causing confusion and a waste of time.
Membership, Brian Duckworth: Brian reported that we have 292 members now with 197 signed up for the Hole-in-One prize.
Tournaments, Orest Kruhlak:
The Eclectic tournament was a success. There were 110 players and 55 teams.
The Member/Member tournament will be on January 3rd and 6th. Day two is Saturday as an experiment, based on member’s request (free up Sunday for Church services). Tee prize is entry to Skins Game on day 1. There is a $200 pot for each flight. Format is: Day 1 = Better Ball, Day 2 = Count both balls. There is a lap prize for low gross and low net on day one.
Match Play begins January 1, 2018 and must be completed by March 21. Matches can be contested on any day but Tuesday. Entry in to the tournament ends December 20,2017. There is a $10 entry fee and Entry forms are in the golf room.
If you need a partner for the Member Guest, let Orest know and he will try to find you one.
Publicity, Dennis Hanks: N/R
Hearts & Flowers, David Shaw: Get Well Cards were sent to Phil Fields and Brian Carolan.
Hole-in-One, Ken Gordon: N/R
Social, Howard Hudson: N/R
SCGA, Clint Jay: Effective January 1, 2018, the SCGA will be sending out individual’s membership information by email. If we (and the SCGA) don’t have an email address for you, please get that information to Clint as soon as possible. SCGA Membership Card, Member Partner benefits (Roger Dunn/The Golf Mart gift card, underpar.com coupon, etc.) will only be available on-line.
Rules, Byron Harvie: N/R
AM Sweeps, Ken Gordon: N/R
PM Sweeps, Bob Breidenbach: N/R
Past President, John Coyle: N/R
Parliamentarian, Dale Erickson: N/R
Canadian Representative, Chris Marshall: N/R
Webmaster, Jim Pollard: N/R
OLD BUSINESS: None
NEW BUSINESS: Howard Hudson and Buck Davis were voted a Lifetime Membership status for services rendered over the years.
It was noted that the Women receive an email when there is a Frost Delay. It was proposed that the Men have that same system activated, rather than sitting through the Channel 98 listings.
The topic of Handicap status and allowing members to drive carts close to the greens was addressed. This has come up before and there is not a general exception. The Association Golf Committee does not allow such access to the greens. Interested members may approach Bob Bridenbach but he will not allow parking of golf carts near the green while putting.
