Pledge of Allegiance was led by: Tony Tilt
Roll Call by Secretary John Whitney

Guest Speaker: Andy Diaz, Course Superintendent
Andy was born in Indio and was raised in a Private Country Club, learning the game of golf. PDG is the sixth course he has worked for and we are fortunate to have him. His goal for PDG is to adopt the Private Club feeling for our residents. He is a fast- green advocate, demonstrated by how much faster our greens are rolling from the past. Everyone appeared to endorse his dream for our club.
They have three children, daughters 14 and 24 with a 22 year old son in the middle. Their son is working in Newport, CA and his 24 year old daughter is playing professional basketball in Spain. The youngest child is a volley ball player.
If you see Andy on the course, please say hi and let him know what you think about the condition of the course, along with any suggestions for improvement.
“Course Tip”: When you fill the fairway divots, please do not mound the sand. Fill divots about ¾ full and run your foot over it after you have filled in the divot.

President, Doug Hodson: Thanks for all who participated in the Member/Member tournament. We made $3,000 over and above the cost of the tournament which will help with other expenses during the year.
There is a new Golf Cart Repair person. Keith Young replaces Buck Rogers in the new Maintenance building. We have heard good comments about them and Keith has some $50 coupons at the pro shop for members.
VP, Rick Yeo: N/R
Secretary, John Whitney: N/R
Treasurer: Gary Druckrey: See Financials above
Club Liaison: Bob Larsen: Bob asked the members how they like the shape of the golf course and there was unanimous approval.
Are there things that can be imporved? Some things yes, there always are.
Adhere to golf cart cart etiquette, staying away from greens and park on the cart paths.
Participate in the divot parties that will be held for general maintenance.
On January 25th, there will be a green repair training session for members who would like to help out and see what the proper method is to repair divots. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 7 am, and an entry into the raffle will be given to attendees, prior to the learning session.
Bob asked for guesses as to the speed of our greens, correct answer is 9.
The First Tee organization will be sponsoring a fund raiser at the Pickford Theater at 7 pm on the 25th titled “The Founders”. This documentary is about the beginning of Women’s professional golf and the ladies who were instrumental in starting the LPGA. Four of them live here in the Valley.
Trees infected with Spider Mites have been trimmed or removed to prepare for a chemical treatment to control the little pests. As it turns out the Course will not have to be closed for this treatment, trees will be injected.
The Greens will be top dressed with a thin layer of sand on the 18th.
A new practice putting green will be installed by the Pickle Ball courts in the near future.
A question was asked about the maximum number of carts allowed on the course per foursome. Nothing has changed from the past, 2 is the number. Bob will look into the policy and enforcement.
Member -at-Large, John Coyle:
John mentioned that Larry Bohannon will speak at the General Membership meeting in February. Larry (Master of Ceremony) is involved in the First Tee production called “The Founders”. This is about the thirteen women who started the LPGA. The film will be shown at 7 pm on the 25th at the Mary Pickford Theater.
Please fix the divots when you practice on the chipping green.
When you see our course maintenance crews working on the course, please take time to thank them for all the work they do. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated staff looking after the course.
Member -at-Large, Tony Tilt: N/R
Handicap, Clint Jay: Clint reiterated that the SCGA was only sending out Membership Cards and Partner Gift Cards (Roger Dunn) by email, no longer in magazines or by mail. He noted that about 30 members do not have emails and he has enrolled them in phantom emails (pdgmgc@gmail.com) that will come back to him until they sign up for emails or some other solution.
[Note: After the meeting Clint sent a clarification of the posting rule that he was asked about at the meeting. The clarification is listed here as an addendum.]
Membership, Brian Duckworth: We have 42 new members this year so far, for a total of 310. We are down from 361 last year.
Tournaments, Orest Kruhlak: The Member/Member was very successful with 124 players (62 teams). We made $3,000 over our costs.
Member/Guest is on February 9, 10 and 11th. The Horse Race will be played on the 9th. Minimum team handicaps for the Horse Race is 15 strokes (total of both players handicaps). There will be para-mutual betting on your own team or others.
Cocktail Reception and Registration will begin at 5:30 pm on the 9th.
If Men’s Club members want to play but don’t have a partner, let Orest know and he will pair you up with someone.
The Club Championship tournament will begin on the 28th of February, more information to come.
Orest wants to thank Rick Yeo and Bob Christensen for all their work in soliciting donations from sponsors this year. They received a round of applause.
Publicity, Dennis Hanks: If you want something posted on Channel 98, give them 2 week’s notice.
Hearts & Flowers, David Shaw: He sent a Get Well card to Gail Erickson, who fell and broke her shoulder during the Christmas break. A Get Well card was also sent to Orest Kruhlak and a Sympathy card was sent to Skip Rowland.
Hole-in-One, Ken Gordon: Doug Hodson mentioned that Ken Dankenbring got a hole in one on number 4.
Social, Howard Hudson: N/R
SCGA, Clint Jay: N/R
Rules, Byron Harvie: Byron reviewed Rule 14.2 which deals with players standing directly behind a person putting so they can “get the line” on the putt. It is illegal, a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play and loss of the hole in Match play. You must stand off to the side before the putt but you can walk behind the putter after the ball has been struck.
He also referred to Rule 14.3, dealing with radios or any artificial device/equipment that plays music. These devices are not allowed while players are making any type of shot. 2 stroke penalty or loss of the Hole.

Jim has installed “new indicators” when a new item is listed on the website. If you are looking for an update on anything, especially sweeps, you can tell whether what is on the site is recent without digging down through the menus and opening pages. New means less than seven days on the website.

Addendum from Clint Jay, Handicap Chairman:
I was asked a question in today’s Member meeting that could have been answered at length and more concisely. The question was “what does the Letter “L” mean printed after your posted Handicap Index”?
My answer was anything above the maximum Handicap Index of 36.4 is designated with a “L” for local club use only. After much thought the following is a more clear explanation on how the systems works.
- The maximum USGA Handicap Index for men is 36.4 and could convert to a higher course handicap when playing different courses.
- An example would be if your maximum Index is 36.4 and you were playing an away course with a Slope Rating of 125, your handicap would be 40.
- If your maximum index is 36.4 and you were playing at P.D.G. from the White Tees with a Slope Rating of 93 your handicap would be 30.
- So you see the USGA maximum allowable of 36.4 converts to a different Course Handicap when playing courses with different Slope Ratings.
- The current Slope Tables used by the USGA range from 67 to 155 which accounts for a wide range of handicaps when playing at away golf courses and/or playing from different tees.
The following are different letter designations used by the USGA for different types of Handicap Index’s and are listed as follows:
L = Local Handicap
M = Handicap modified by Handicap Committee
N = Nine-hole Handicap Index
NL = Nine hole local handicap
R = Handicap automatically reduced for exceptional tournament scores
SL = Short Course Handicap
WD = Handicap withdrawn by the Handicap Committee
I hope this information helps clear up any questions you may have thought were unanswered.
Clint Jay, Handicap Chairman
