Pledge of Allegiance – Mike Roberts
Guest Speaker – Larry Bohannan from the Desert Sun
Roll Call – John Coyle
Absent – John Whitney, Dale Erikson, Dave Levandowski, Stephen Warren
Minutes – Due to an oversight, the minutes from the last meeting were not on our website. The only significant thing is that we did approve the new bylaws, so those will be up on the website as soon as we can manage it, and without objection they’ll be accepted here.
Treasurer’s Report – Clarke Sharar – Almost $11.000.00 to the SCGA this month. Current Bank Balance: $12,911.00. It looks like we’re going to finish off in a positive manner this year. Chris Marshall and Bob Shakespeare did a great job with the Member/Guest tournament this year. For that tournament, Bob’s estimates came very close to the actuals. Estimated total receipts $21,200.00, actual $21,001.85. Estimated expenses $23,200.00, actual $22 850.00. Estimated loss $2,000.00, actual $1664.00
Officers Comments/Reports

Vice President – Ron Hagedorn – N/R
Secretary – Brett Hamilton (standing in for John Whitney) N/R
Club Liaison – Richard Warburton – N/R
Member-at-Large – Bob Shakespeare – N/R
Member-at-Large – Dale Erickson (absent) – N/R
Handicap – Doug Hodson (standing in for Stephen Warren)
We are all supposed to be posting our own scores, including sweeps day. The only scores you do not post are for legitimate tournaments, like the club championship. For example, this past sweeps Wednesday, we had 40 people that did not post their scores. There’s a little issue with some of the Canadians due to the systems not crossing over, so Canadians, please post here in the US on your GHIN number, until they get that resolved in Canada. Please take care and make sure you type in the correct GHIN number (check the name), pick the correct golf club, tee played and the date of the round. Don’t forget to back date the round if you forget to post on the day you played. Contact Stephen Warren or Doug Hodson to get any required corrections resolved. Cards will be randomly checked to help pick up errors and/or omissions. Bob Shakespeare (future co-chair of the handicap committee) made comment that some folks have inadvertently posted scored to Palm Desert Resort instead of our course. Again, please be diligent on the accuracy of your posting input.
Membership – Doug Hodson
309 Members including life members, 2 new members. if you see somebody new out there, introduce yourself and say, “I haven’t seen you around”. Introduce yourself and show that we are a friendly club and we want to be that way. If there’s anything that I can do to help membership for any questions, be sure to call me or email me.
Tournaments – Chris Marshall
The Member/Guest tournament was quite successful this year. Especially the horse race portion because we had 42 teams battling it out for four spots. This was the most we’ve ever had. Orest Krulach who organized and ran this tournament since its inception will be retiring this year. He will also be retiring from being the Canadian team captain in the CanAm tournament, a post he has held for 12 of 13 years. Chris Marshall will be taking over these two positions.
We have a problem in that we seem to only have about 130 of our members typically participate in our tournaments. That leaves about 170 members that only belong because they can maintain a handicap. A lot of them don’t even play in our weekly sweeps. John Coyle commented that he agrees that Chris and Bob have made the tournaments fun to attract other members. Mike Roberts made comment that the participation statistic has historically been the case for the years he was tournament chairman. Other general discussion ensued with comments from others. Chris encouraged us to help evolve the tournaments by a focus on having fun as opposed to pure competition.
Upcoming tournaments
- Club Championship – March 4th, 7th & 8th. There is a red/gold division for gentlemen that only want to play on Wednesday (4th) and Sunday (8th). For either division, the cost of $20.00 per person includes the skins game for all three days and the Sunday meal. On the entry form, you can specify a preferred partner after which it will be organized by handicap/flight.
- President’s Cup – March 25th to honor our past presidents. Organized by computer generated four-man teams playing with a Stableford scoring system. Two divisions: below 12 or 13 and higher than 13 or 14. A meal will be included.
Check the website where Dan Cameron and Jim Pollard have done a good job of posting results and pictures of our past tournaments. We appreciate all their efforts. Bob and I have enjoyed the past couple of years working the tournaments with a theme of having fun, meeting some great people and supporting our community.
Publicity – Dan Cameron
Encourage people that are new in the community to come out and play! Dan told how that his father-in-law introduced the game to him five years ago. Reach out to people and inspire them to have fun trying the game.

PM Sweeps – Vacant – N/R

Old Business – John Coyle
- 9-hole Wednesday PM group – A possibility is now a probability that a nine-hole group will play on Wednesday afternoons. We’ll wait until we get to about the middle of next month, waiting until the numbers of 18- hole participants go down on Wednesday afternoons. Bob will take care of it. We envision starting these guys on number one and number 10, a couple of foursomes, maximum of 16, and we’ll offer an opportunity for some of these older guys who only want to play nine holes. And as Joe Dion and Virgil pointed out here a couple of months ago, it won’t be long before all of us are in that category to where nine holes will be enough.
- Election of officers – We only have one candidate for each position. Our bylaws call for us to ask for nominations from the floor. George Gamble headed up the nominating committee and read off the following nominations
- President – John Coyle
- Vice President – Dan Cameron
- Secretary – Brett Hamilton
- Treasurer – Clarke Sharar
- Club Liaison – Richard Warburton
- Member at Large – Bob Larsen
- Member at Large – Rich Davidson
John Coyle called for nominations from the floor. Hearing none, he asked for a vote of approval from the members that were present. Vote passed.
New Business – None
Closing Remarks – President – None
Adjournment – President John Coyle adjourned the meeting at 10:04 AM.

John reviewed the MGC slate of Board Positions. (See New Business)
On March 17 we will have our Annual Review meeting, when we will summarize the activities of the year and pay tribute to deserving individuals. We are hoping for a Continental Breakfast at this meeting.
John mentioned that a request from some of our senior members for a 9-hole game may come to fruition later this season. There will be 16 players in this group, starting on holes 1 and 10. If we still have a waiting list for the Wednesday Sweeps, the “Seniors Game” will be postponed. There is progress but stay tuned for future information.
VP, Ron Hagedorn: N/R
Secretary, John Whitney: N/R
Treasurer, Clarke Sharar: See Financials above
Club Liaison, Richard Warburton:
Andy Diaz has requested funds to complete the tee box leveling program next summer.
Andy and his crew will do some “deep punching” of certain greens to treat severe damage, requiring more than general maintenance.
Andy’s goal is to have the greens roll between 10 and 12 on the Stimp meter.
Andy is also looking at ways to make the par 3’s more interesting to play.
The Can/Am tournament will be held on February 15 & 16 (subsequent to the Member/Guest).
Member-at-Large: Bob Shakespeare: N/R
Member -at-Large, Dale Erickson: N/R
Handicap, Stephen Warren:
Please post all of your scores from now on, including Sweeps on Wednesday. It takes too long for Steve to post each member’s scores.
The new Handicap system has many nuances that members should research. Look up “Exceptional Scores” for one of the major changes. The factors that go into computing our handicaps are complex and if you are truly interested in knowing all of them, please do your research. We have helpful information on our website and SCGA also has information you can find to get down to the “nitty gritty”.
Membership, Doug Hodson:
We have 309 members with 8 Complimentary, Social or Life Members (301 paying members).
Tournaments, Chris Marshall/Bob Shakespeare:
We had 124 golfers for the Member/Member, down a little from last year. Our 4 games (50-50, etc.) were successful as usual.
Next up is the Member/Guest, February 7, 8 and 9. Entries will be open until Sunday February 2 at 5 pm. The Horse Race is on February 7 and we have close to 30 teams. Orest Kruhlak will oversee this part of the tournament as he has done in the past. We are looking for someone to take over this game next year.
The Club Championship is next in line on February 26th, 29th and March 1. Entry fee is $20, which pays for the lunch. Entry forms are in the Golf Room. We will continue with the Red/Gold flight (if there are enough entrants) as a two-day event. The dates for the Red/Gold are the 26th and March 1.
The Presidents Cup is in the planning stages. We will keep the 4-person team Stableford format. The Computer will choose the teams. More information to come.
Please sign up for some or all of the games.
Publicity, Dan Cameron

Officers Comments/Reports:
President, John Coyle:
George Gamble will chair a Nominating Committee for “Termed Out” Board members, with the help of Tom Hess and John Schwankl.
Sandy Lounsbury from the First Tee will be our guest speaker at the January, 2020 General Membership meeting.
The MGC Board is updating the By-Laws to eliminate unnecessary items and update others.
We will not have Sweeps on December25th or January 1st (2020). There will be open play for those who wish to play on Christmas and New Year’s Day. The Women will not have organized play on the 24th of December.
VP, Ron Hagedorn:
Ron reminded us that the days will be getting longer for our golfing outings.
Secretary, John Whitney: N/R
Treasurer, Clarke Sharar: See Financials above
Clarke asked members to only use one staple when sending a check in with an entry form.
Club Liaison, Richard Warburton:
Andy Diaz and his crew will be treating some of the greens to eliminate a fungus growing deep in the ground. This will require “Punching” the greens in affected areas. Please be patient with this treatment and play around it.
There will be a “divot party”, as we had last year. It will be conducted on January 2, 2020 and we are inviting everyone who can make it to help fill divots with our new sand. It was fun last year, complete with Coffee and Doughnuts. Please come out and help police the many divots in the fairways.
Richard mentioned that we have 24 people who are fixing ball marks on the greens. These are volunteers who give their time to keep our putting surfaces top notch. We encourage more people to volunteer for this very important activity.
Please remind other players you golf with to fill divots with sand and repair ball marks.
We also ask players to knock sand off their shoes after you blast out of the traps. We have been seeing a lot of sand deposited on the greens from shoes that retain sand after a shot. If your playing partners forget to remove the sand, please remind them to do so.
Member -at-Large, Bob Shakespeare: N/R
Member -at-Large, Dale Erickson: N/R
Dale asked members to look for a Frost Delay on Wednesday. He also mentioned that the early start time (7:30 am) will end in January, 2020.
Handicap, Stephen Warren:
The New Handicap System begins on January 1. The Pro Shop computer will be “down” from January 1st to the 5th. Save your scorecards and post them on the 6th or thereafter.
Our individual Index will change on January 1st to coincide with the new Hcp system.
Steve appealed to all members to write their name on scorecards before leaving them for him to post. Obviously, it is impossible to know who the card belongs to without a name.
Membership, Doug Hodson:
We have 290 members so far. This number includes 25 new members. 43 members did not renew.
Tournaments, Chris Marshall/Bob Shakespeare:
Under the new handicap system, our handicaps as of the Sunday prior to a tournament will be used for that event. If the tournament is for 3 days, the handicap for the first day will be used throughout the tournament.
The Individual Eclectic tournament began in the rain (108 players) and ended in better weather on Sunday. We welcomed 112 golfers for this two-day event, beginning on December 4th and ending on December 8th. The rain didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of those who played on Wednesday and as usual everyone had a great time. The popular 50/50 drawing, Blackout Boards, Hit the Green on 4 and 14 and KP’s on 7 and 17 added to the fun. The theme is having fun, meeting some wonderful people and supporting our community. All three were accomplished. To cap things off, the luncheon featured a delicious Pork Tenderloin meal.
Our next tournament is the Member/Member, scheduled for January 8th and 11th, 2020. Entry Forms are available in the Golf Room (Pro Shop). Entry deadline is Saturday, January 4th at 5 PM. The format will be the same as last year, 2-person Scramble on Wednesday and 2 Person Pinehurst/Chapman on Saturday. A full description of the formats is posted in the Pro Shop (Golf Room).
Initial preparations are in motion for the Member/Guest on February 7, 8 and 9. There will be a format change to the M/G. We will play a 2 Person Pinehurst/Chapman game on Saturday and Individual play on Sunday (gross and net). Orest Kruhlak will run the popular “Horse Race” again this year. He will be stepping down from these duties next year and we are looking for a volunteer to take over this event in 2021 (training provided). If you have not ever participated in this event, give it a try. You won’t regret playing.
George Gamble has stepped forward to help find volunteers who will fill open positions on the MGC Board. There will be numerous Chair positions to be filled and we encourage Members to step forward and help inject new ideas and enthusiasm into our Organization. All positions come with training!!
Please check in at least 30 minutes prior to tournaments and Sweeps events so our hard working helpers have time to warm up a little.

OLD BUSINESS:
The PDG Board members voted to give Jim Pollard a $100 Visa Card in thanks for saving the Club over $200 per year in expenses for Website administrative services.
A suggestion was made to expand the capabilities of the Website. Some examples are paying member dues and payments for tournaments. John Coyle agreed and said we would consider other possibilities.
NEW BUSINESS:
The Board received a request from a member to consider forming a 9 Hole group, like the Lady Road Runners.
The Road Runners are separate from the Ladies Club and function as their own organization. It is unclear how many Men we have who are interested in forming a group to only play 9 holes. Finding a day to accommodate a nine-hole group will be difficult. Much more information needs to be collected before considering whether we can accomplish this type of thing.

GUEST SPEAKER:
Bob Breidenbach was our guest speaker for this month’s meeting. Bob touched on how to fix a ball mark on the green without disturbing the root structure. Even if you cannot tell which ball mark is yours, “Fix Two” other ball marks anywhere on the green. If we all do that, we will maintain the quality of our greens.
He also asked that all MGC members respect the no parking signs off the first tee.
Bob gave some putting tips and an exercise we can practice at home to smooth out our stroke. He has a grandstand seat from the Pro Shop to watch members putt and his tips addressed the most common mistakes most of us make.

Treasure’s Report: Total Deposits: $16,044, Total Expenses: $3215.63, Revenue from Sponsors: $3200, Ending Bank Balance: $20,821.86
Officers Comments/Reports:
President, John Coyle:
Business Items:
Welcome Back Luncheon was a success, plenty of pizza and beer.
We have to set a time for elections to the MGC Board and form an Election Nominating Committee.
The Charity Golf Tournament this year will benefit the First Tee of Palm Desert. Please let a Board Member know if you are willing to help with this very important event.
Announcements/Reminders:
Wednesday Sweeps will tee off at 7:30 and 12 Noon through December.
Andy Diaz will be our guest speaker at the December Membership meeting on December 17.
We need volunteers for the Club By-Laws Committee. Let John know if you are interested.
The Turkey Shoot is tomorrow the 20th and the Ham Shoot is on December 18.
Cart Path Only will be enforced until December 2, when it will change to 90 degrees.
Commentary:
Bunker rakes should be left in the trap at a right angle to the edge of the trap. The rake should be left in the trap with the tip of the handle at the edge of the trap.
Remember to mark your ball before lifting or touching it.
You cannot ground your club in the sand prior to a shot but you can lean on your club while the clubhead touches the sand. Accidental contact with the sand is not a penalty stroke.
Putting with the flag in is allowed and quite popular.
Please thank our Course maintenance workers for their efforts to keep our course in such great shape. It is a necessary evil to have them out there while we play but they do a great job.
Our Club Champion, George Gamble has agreed to play in the SCGA Club Championship tournament later this year, representing PDG. Jenny Hart will represent the Women’s Club.

Club Liaison, Richard Warburton:
The Welcome Back Luncheon was a big success and thanks to Ken Gordon for all the work he put into the event.
Richard appealed to the membership for help in keeping the greens maintained in the great shape we have become accustomed to. If you can help with a green close to your residence, please let him know.
The practice chipping area below the 4th tee has been enlarged and more holes were added to accommodate a greater number of members without getting golf balls mixed up.
He also asked members to adopt the driving range practice of forming a “strip” when hitting out of the longer grass around the pitching green. When you are done, please fill in the strip with sand so the grass will grow back. Please fix ball marks on the green also, at least “Fix Two”.
Member-at-Large: Bob Shakespeare
Bob asked members to contact him if they want something addressed by the Board.

Handicap, Stephen Warren:
January 1, 2020 begins the new Handicap posting system. Members are responsible for posting your scores each time you play. There will be a new formula for generating handicaps, with new maximums per hole. More information will be presented to members the closer we get to January. Handicaps change at midnight each day. By January 5th, all handicaps will change to reflect the new policy. Your 8 best rounds out of the last 20 will be used to compute your handicap.
Membership, Doug Hodson:
We have 25 new members signed up for this season. Of the 333 potential members we have, 256 have paid dues.
Doug mentioned there will be an additional $5.00 fee if Canadian checks are used to pay membership dues. The bank charges the MGC $5.00 for every Canadian check used.
Tournaments, Chris Marshall/Bob Shakespeare:
The individual Eclectic tournament will be played on December 4th and 8th. Both rounds will begin at 8 am. This is an individual’s tournament (no teams).
The Member Guest tournament will be altered a little, more to come on that.
If you know of any potential sponsors who may want to support the tournament, please let Chris or Bob know who they are (or you can solicit their participation yourself).
Handicaps used for this tournament will be based on what they are on the Sunday prior to play.
The Member/Member tournament will be the same as last year. The Member/Guest will be modified a little, stay tuned.
